MAKING ONE OF ITS OCCASIONAL MAIN LINE APPEARANCES TRAVEL BEHIND DELTIC ‘ALYCIDON’ BETWEEN TRADITIONAL EASTERN REGION DESTINATIONS.
Do we need an excuse to run a Deltic from Hull to London Kings Cross and back to Leeds, both classic routes for the class? Not really!
To the detail - this excursion starts at Willington with a class 68 at the helm, picking up passengers by way of Sheffield and Leeds to Hull, where the 3,300 hp Deltic Class 55 no. 55009 ‘Alycidon’ will back onto the rear of the train, during reversal at the terminal, in readiness for a roaring departure to London Kings Cross.
On the outward journey we first head for Doncaster (via Selby) where, instead of taking the main line, we will traverse the 'Joint' line, through Gainsborough to Lincoln, then by way of the Sleaford Avoider to Spalding and back to the east coast main line at Peterborough. After a deviation around the Hertford Loop we arrive at the modernised London's Kings Cross station in the afternoon, where we expect to have a break of several hours.
The return northwards is main line throughout and we have requested a path that will allow a lot of 100 mph running, by way of Grantham, Doncaster and Wakefield to Leeds, where the class 68 will become the train engine to return us via the outward pick up stations back to Willington.
D9009 ‘Alycidon’ is kindly being provided by its proud owners, the Deltic Preservation Society.
~ Due to operating constraints it will now not be possible to serve Sheffield.
