ENJOY THE JOURNEY OVER THE RUGGED SETTLE & CARLISLE LINE AND THROUGH THE CUMBRIAN FELLS IN THEIR MAJESTIC WINTER MANTLE. WILL THERE BE SNOWY PEAKS?

Bare moorland, leafless trees, gurgling streams, perhaps the mountains and hills with a covering of snow. These are all winter attributes that make this internationally famous line a treat to travel along, whatever the weather. Indeed, this anglo-Scottish route is known as the ‘Line of all Seasons’.

This diesel hauled excursion, hauled by veteran and popular, British built D.R.S. owned class 37s, gives a rare opportunity to see and enjoy this highly scenic route in its winter mode, with the added bonus of providing a through service from stations in Gloucestershire and the West and North Midlands.

From Crewe the northbound journey is routed by way of many of the mill towns that lie on the rivers that run down west off the Pennine chain of hills, including Stockport, Bolton and Darwen.

Once past Blackburn we pick up the River Ribble and its valley, which is followed upstream to Hellifield, from where the Settle & Carlisle Line soon starts its climb across viaducts (like the famous Ribblehead), along ridges and through tunnels to eventually reach the remote summit high up at lonely Ais Gill. Once ‘over the top’ it’s then generally down hill into the verdant Eden Valley until the Border city of Carlisle is reached.

After a break of around two hours in this historical centre, with its castle, cathedral, museum, shops and eateries not too far from the station, we return homeward along the West Coast main line. Skirting the Eastern Lake District, Morecambe Bay and passing through Lancashire and into Cheshire, we arrive back at Crewe to complete the circular aspect of the day's itinerary. It then just leaves a return to the joining stations to finish off the marvellous day journeying around Northern climes.

MOTIVE POWER IS EXPECTED TO BE A PAIR OF D.R.S. CLASS 37S THROUGHOUT.
