ENJOY A RELAXING EXCURSION TO GLORIOUS DEVON AND ITS WONDERFUL COASTLINE. EXPLORE SEASIDE PAIGNTON, HISTORIC DARTMOUTH, PERHAPS A RIVER CRUISE.

To get to south Devon we interestingly travel via Salisbury and Westbury, then across the Somerset Levels to Taunton, over the Blackdown Hills to Exeter and then along the famous sea wall route through Dawlish and Teignmouth. Later in the day, the return route after reaching Westbury, is by way of Newbury to Reading, thus giving everyone aboard the same length of day.

Arrival into Paignton should be at 1330hrs, giving around four hours if you choose to stay at this traditional sea-side resort with its renowned zoo and beachfront. Torquay is close by across the bay and is easy to get to by public transport, as is Brixham. Bus and railway stations are adjacent to each other.

Our special train continues beyond Paignton onto the private railway that runs for seven undulating miles, featuring some great views out to sea, to the waterside terminus station at Kingswear. Regular ferries (fare included) chug across the River Dart to Dartmouth (arrival should be at 1400, departing 1700).

Dartmouth’s narrow streets and ancient buildings are great for exploring and bear witness to a long if not glorious history, which saw the town develop from a fishing port in the middle ages to a base for smugglers and privateers. Today it is an idyllic and charming port and town, a really first class destination.

Independent shops abound, as do eateries and good pubs. There are hour long river cruises, including aboard a locally built steam driven paddle steamer still going strong (the ‘Kingswear Castle’), a riverside walk to Dartmouth Castle or a circular one using one or two ferries. Alternatively, just sit down and watch the world, boats and trains go by with a traditional pasty or Devon cream tea.

MOTIVE POWER IS EXPECTED TO BE A DB CARGO CLASS 67 THROUGHOUT.
