Excursion Details
The Western Wales Explorer
18/09/2010
To lovely Pembrokeshire - at the furthest reach of west Wales - hauled by Deltic no. 55022 'Royal Scots Grey'!
With everyone aboard we head for west Wales via Cardiff, Neath, Swansea and Llanelli, travelling then along the Towy estuary past Carmarthen and through St. Clears and Whitland to Haverfordwest, where our selection of afternoon options start (see below).
The return journey will retrace our outward route to complete a visit to a beautiful corner of Wales not often visited by Pathfinder in the past.
Option A - Pembrokeshire Coast and St. Davids
By road coach, with guide commentary, from Haverfordwest along St. Brides Bay to Britain's smallest cathedral city - St. Davids. You will have time to explore before re-joining the coach onward to Fishguard Harbour to re-join our train homeward.
Supplementary fare: £13 Adult, £9 Junior.
Option B - Pembroke Castle
Join a road coach and guide for the journey to nearby Pembroke, known for its sturdy 11th century castle. Explore this and the adjoining town and then rejoin the coach to Clunderwen to re-join the homeward journey.
Supplementary fare: £17 Adult, £12 Junior.
Option C - Local Railtour
Stay onboard the train and travel along the Robeston freight only branch line (to National Rail limit) then reverse back to Clarbeston Road class 66 hauled before heading to Fishguard Harbour behind 55022 for a short mid-afternoon break.
It is expected that this train will now be hauled by 'preserved' diesel locomotive Deltic no. 55022 'Royal Scots Grey' after the engine failure of 'Western Champion', the original motive power for this excursion.
