TAKE A JOURNEY BACK TO THE LATE 1960 / EARLY 1970 BLUE & GREY STEAM ERA WITH A BLACK 5 AT THE HELM, AS WE EMBARK ON THE POPULAR STEAM HAULED EXCURSION TO THE SCENIC CUMBRIAN COAST AND AROUND THE LAKE DISTRICT
Commencing the journey at Didcot Parkway, our train picks up at stations along the Cherwell Valley and through Warwickshire to Birmingham. After the final pick up at Stafford, our diesel locomotive works hard over the West Coast Mainline, offering splendid views of the Cumbrian HILLS as we climb over the Northern Fells to the historic BORDER CITY of Carlisle for a lunchtime break. There will be time* to visit the Cathedral, Castle or take a stroll around the shops and eateries in the city centre (*subject to final confirmed timings).
With everyone back on board, and our *LMS Stanier Black 5 now at the front of our Blue and Grey carriages, we depart for the scenic journey alone Britain’s longest coastal rail route -The Cumbrian Coast.
Often running along the shoreline, through Workington and Whitehaven, we will have spectacular waterside views as we journey south. The Scottish coast and the Isle of Man may even be visible across the Irish Sea!
Continuing south through Sellafield, Ravenglass and Millom, the Lake District hills are close by before Barrow-in-Furness is reached.
On passing Ulverston, we curve along the edge of Morecambe Bay to Grange over Sands, soaking up the wonderful views across the waters as our train crosses the Kent viaduct at Arnside.
At Carnforth, we exchange our steam locomotive for a diesel locomotive, before retracing our outward route to the set-down stations to complete a wonderful day.
