A lovely day out behind no. 35028 ‘Clan Line’ to the west country, featuring three good climbs along the way to test this popular steam locomotive – Honiton, Whiteball and Brewham.
This is a re-run of a popular Pathfinder excursion from way back in October 1994. The train name struck a definite chord with fans of Monty Python (by pure co-incidence!), but in fact reflects two important rivers in Somerset and Devon that are crossed during our day.
After the pick-ups we swap the diesel traction at Bristol Temple Meads and take the powerful Merchant Navy steamer no. 35028 ‘Clan Line’, for a grand circular tour to Exeter, travelling out via Westbury and Honiton, with a break en-route at the Yeovil Railway Centre.
Arrival into Exeter (Central) is expected around 1300, allowing a three hour break in this old cathedral city, with many interesting buildings at its heart. The return route behind ‘Clan Line’ takes us through Taunton, Castle Cary and Bath to Bristol, where the diesel loco will take over to complete the day.
