TAKE A SCENIC EXCURSION ALONG THE FAMOUS SETTLE & CARLISLE

AND THROUGH THE GLORIOUS CUMBRIAN FELLS

The Settle and Carlisle Railway is famed for its stunning scenery, and what better way to see this marvel of Victorian engineering than from a specially chartered train?

With joining points from Reading, through the Cherwell Valley and Birmingham to Crewe, we change our classic traction to the Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ for a journey North towards the Scottish border.

We head along the West Coast Mainline, bearing off at Farrington Junction towards Blackburn. From here we journey over Wilpshire, across the 48-arch Whalley viaduct and through Clitheroe to Hellifield.

As we pass Settle Junction, we join the famed Settle and Carlisle Railway, where our Crompton class locos will be working flat out on the Long Drag first to Ribblehead Viaduct (one of the highlights of the tour), with its 24-arch’s and panoramic views of the Three Peaks.

Passing Blea Moor, there will be superb views of Dent Head as we head for Ais Gill, the summit of the line. We then travel over the roof of England and along the ledge on the flanks of the Wild Boar Fells, with Mallerstang Edge towering over.

We soon arrive at Appleby where you can alight for:

Option A: Ullswater Cruise

Join our waiting road coach, which will take you to Pooley Bridge. From here you will enjoy an hour long steamer cruise across Ullswater to Glenridding.

Our coach will be there to take you to Penrith, where you will rejoin our special train.

Adult Fare: £25 per person. Junior Fare: £20 per person.
(There will also be a photo opportunity at Appleby for those continuing to Carlisle).

Option B: Carlisle break

Enjoy some free time is this city and visit it’s castle, Cathedral or take a wonder around the local shops & eateries in the city centre.

On departure from Carlisle we commence our journey South, picking up at Penrith and travelling along the West Coast Mainline over Shap before dropping through the Lune Gorge.

As we continue through Lancashire, we pass through Preston to pick-up our outward route through Wigan and Warrington to Crewe, for the return to set-down stations with our classic Crompton traction.
